The FMS 1:18 FCX18 II Ford F-100 Brushless is not interesting simply because FMS has replaced a brushed motor with a brushless one. The more important change is that the new 1312 motor sits inside a separate ESC-and-receiver architecture while the truck keeps the low-centre-of-gravity FCX18 II chassis, straight axles, two-speed transmission, magnetic hard body and detailed sixth-generation Ford F-100 identity.

The FMS 1:18 FCX18 II Ford F-100 could easily have been another attractive classic pickup built around familiar micro-crawler hardware. It is more interesting than that. Beneath the officially licensed Ford body sits the second-generation FCX18 chassis, giving this small truck a new mechanical foundation as well as one of the strongest scale presentations currently available in the FMS crawler range.

The Pocher Ducati Panigale V2 Superquadro Final Edition is not simply a large motorcycle model. At 1:4 scale, with more than 700 engineered components and a finished weight of around 5kg, it turns one of Ducati's most significant modern superbikes into a substantial mechanical building project. The FairRC 1/24 FCX24 White Blaze K5 Mod RTR is more interesting when viewed as part of an ecosystem rather than simply as another custom-colour micro crawler. Underneath the white retro-inspired body is the established FMS FCX24 Chevrolet K5 platform, while FairRC and BATRAZZI provide the wheels, tyres, chassis parts, scale accessories and upgrade paths that can take the same vehicle in very different directions.

Hornby TT:120 has turned the traditional model railway starter set into something much easier to accommodate at home. At 1:120 scale, complete passenger and freight layouts can fit into substantially less space than equivalent OO systems while still offering recognisable British steam, diesel and high-speed trains, expandable track and a route into Hornby's HM7000 digital control ecosystem.

The HobbyPlus DKR-4 Fortis brings something genuinely different to the increasingly crowded 1:18 RC market. FairRC is becoming more interesting for a reason that has relatively little to do with any single RC crawler. The important development is the structure forming around the vehicles.

Toyota is becoming one of the strongest vehicle families in the FMS scale RC range. Instead of offering one Land Cruiser body on one chassis, FMS now covers several very different Toyota platforms — from the compact FCX24M Tacoma to the FCX18S LC80, the unusual 1:12 FJ45 Pickup and full-size 1:10 Land Cruiser crawlers.

Locomotives and rolling stock may provide the movement, but bridges, stations, signal boxes, depots and trackside buildings are what turn a model railway into a believable place.

A square-body crawler works best when it looks like something you would actually keep driving.
