Remote-controlled heavy equipment has become one of the more serious corners of the RC hobby — machines built to replicate the function of real construction vehicles, not just their appearance. At the centre of this market are two very different approaches: LESU's fully hydraulic, predominantly metal excavators are built for adult hobbyists who want real hydraulic fluid pressure driving real cylinders, and Huina's alloy excavators and dump trucks are positioned at a more accessible entry point with mechanical actuation and a lower barrier to ownership. This guide covers what separates them and which direction makes sense depending on what you want from the hobby.

What "Hydraulic" Actually Means in RC Heavy Equipment

The term 'hydraulic' is used loosely across RC construction vehicles, and this distinction is significant for buying decisions.

True hydraulic RC excavators — the LESU range being the clearest example — use a closed hydraulic circuit with real hydraulic fluid, a motorised pump, directional control valves and hydraulic cylinders to drive boom, arm and bucket movement. The pump pressurises the fluid, the operator controls valve channels to direct flow, and the cylinders extend and retract with the weight, speed and feel of real hydraulic actuation. At 1:14 scale, a LESU machine running at 4MPa hydraulic pressure and dual pumps produces movement that is genuinely different in character from any servo-driven alternative.

Servo-actuated machines — including most Huina models and many budget excavators — use electric servo motors connected to the boom and arm linkages. They move faster and more precisely in some respects, but the feel is fundamentally different: servo actuation is immediate and mechanical, whereas hydraulic actuation is progressive and load-sensitive. Neither is objectively superior, but they represent very different experiences and price points.

LESU — The Hydraulic Standard

LESU produces the most comprehensive range of fully hydraulic 1:14 scale construction vehicles currently available. Their machines are built predominantly from metal — the LR956 is 95% metal by construction, the LR960 uses metal throughout except for cab glass and select decorative parts — and are designed to be functional models as much as display pieces.

LESU LR956 — The Mid-Range Hydraulic Excavator

The LR956 is LESU's most established excavator platform, available in two arm configurations: a 2-arm version and a 3-arm version with extended reach. Both run a dual-pump hydraulic system at 4MPa, with 6-channel or 7-channel directional valve control depending on the variant. The 2-arm RTR version ships painted and assembled at approximately 20.5kg — a significant physical presence at 1:14 scale. Key dimensions on the 2-arm: 878mm overall length, 766mm maximum digging height, 568mm maximum digging depth and 823mm maximum digging radius. The 3-arm version extends reach considerably — maximum digging height reaches 1,106mm and digging radius 1,022mm.

RTR versions ship with the Flysky PL18EV LITE radio system, battery, motor, servo, ESC, dual pump hydraulic system and full lighting. PNP versions are available for builders who already own compatible radio equipment.

LESU LR960 — The Heavy Machine

The LR960 is LESU's larger platform, weighing approximately 38.5kg and running a 13-way directional valve integrated pump system. Where the LR956 is a serious hobbyist machine, the LR960 is genuinely substantial engineering – the kind of model that requires planning around where it will be displayed and operated. It ships RTR with the Frsky XE radio system, full hydraulic system, GPS, warning lights and quick-release coupler for switching attachments.

LESU SK500LC — Hydraulic Excavator, Different Platform

The SK500LC runs a 6-channel valve CNC-machined body on a tracked platform, offering a different visual profile from the LR series – modelled on the Kobelco SK500 in overall proportions. It represents the same fully hydraulic approach as the LR machines in a different body style.

LESU Backhoe Loader and Dump Truck

LESU also produces the Aoue BL71 backhoe loader — a 1:14 scale backhoe with hydraulic operation across both the front loader and rear digging arm, covering a different type of construction site machine from the tracked excavators. The 8x8 Toucan hydraulic dump truck covers the haulage side of heavy equipment – a full metal chassis with hydraulic bed operation, FMX cabin and light and sound system.

Huina — The Accessible Entry Point

Huina produces the most widely available alloy RC construction vehicles in the mid-range price bracket. Their machines use mechanical actuation rather than true hydraulics, but the alloy construction, multi-channel control and operational detail make them a genuine hobby product rather than a toy.

The Huina 1593 is the most referenced model in the RC excavator community — a 1:14 scale, 22-channel alloy excavator with 360-degree cab rotation, working tracks and full boom, arm and bucket control via 2.4GHz radio. The Huina 1536 is a 1:14 scale, 8WD dump truck with a large alloy construction. Both represent the strongest value-per-feature proposition in construction RC at their price tier.

For builders who want the operational experience of RC heavy equipment without the maintenance requirements and investment of a true hydraulic system, Huina is the natural starting point. For builders who find the Huina experience compelling and want to go further, the LESU range is the next step.

Which Direction Is Right for You

The choice between LESU and Huina is primarily a question of what you want the experience to be. If the appeal is the mechanical operation of real hydraulic systems at scale — the progressive movement of a cylinder under pressure, the feel of dual-pump actuation, and the weight and presence of a predominantly metal machine — then LESU is the correct category, and the LR956 RTR is the most accessible entry point within it.

If the appeal is controlling a detailed construction vehicle at a lower entry cost, with faster movement and simpler maintenance, the Huina 1593 excavator or 1536 dump truck covers that well and leaves room to decide later whether to go further into hydraulic machines.
