FMS FCX24M Buyer's Guide — Why So Many Micro RC Fans Prefer It
Ask in any FMS community which 1/24 scale crawler people actually prefer running, and the FCX24M comes up more often than any other variant. It is not the original FCX24, and it is not simply an FCX24S with a different body — the FCX24M is a distinct sub-platform with a new chassis, an extended wheelbase, and a body range that covers some of the most recognisable licensed subjects in the micro crawler segment. This guide covers what the FCX24M actually is, how it differs from the FCX24S, and which specific models in the range are worth your attention.

What the FCX24M Actually Is
The "M" in FCX24M stands for the extended wheelbase chassis that FMS developed for wider-cab body subjects — trucks and SUVs where the standard FCX24S wheelbase would produce disproportionate body-to-chassis proportions. The FCX24M Toyota Tacoma, for instance, uses a verified 153mm (6.02") wheelbase — noticeably longer than the standard FCX24S configuration — with ladder-frame construction and solid axles designed specifically for the wider, longer pickup body.
This matters for two reasons. First, the longer wheelbase improves stability on uneven terrain, distributing weight across a wider span and reducing the tendency to pivot over the front axle on inclines. Second, it allows FMS to produce licensed body replicas at accurate proportions for subjects that would look wrong on the shorter FCX24S frame – the Tacoma, the Land Rover Defender family, and the FairRC Mod RTR interpretations that have built a strong following in the community.

The FCX24M Toyota Tacoma — The Standout Subject
The FMS 1/24 FCX24M Toyota Tacoma RTR is currently the most prominent FCX24M release and the model most frequently referenced in community discussions. It is officially licensed by Toyota, available in three factory-matched colours (Grey, Red, Blue), and built on the extended 153mm wheelbase FCX24M chassis with portal axles, a two-speed transmission and a high-torque 050 motor. The ABS hard body captures the current Tacoma's distinctive proportions – wide cab, short bed, aggressive front end – with a moulded grille, mirrors, door handles and bumpers.
The all-new off-road tyre set fitted to the Tacoma was developed specifically for the FCX24M chassis — a wider contact patch and more aggressive tread — and delivers noticeably more grip than the standard FCX24S tyre on loose indoor surfaces and light outdoor terrain.
FairRC's Mod RTR interpretation of the FCX24M Tacoma platform — the FCX24M Taco White Truck Mod RTR — is the factory-customised version, featuring BATRAZZI beadlock wheels and a custom white body finish. It is one of the most visually distinctive models in the current 1/24 market and one of the reasons the FCX24M has built such strong community preference.
The FCX24M Land Rover Family — Camel Trophy in 1/24
The FCX24M Land Rover family covers four officially licensed subjects — Range Rover, Discovery, Defender 90 and Defender 110 — all built on the FCX24M chassis in the iconic Camel Trophy sand-yellow livery. The Camel Trophy was a vehicle-oriented endurance event run between 1980 and 2000, frequently described as the Olympics of 4x4, and Land Rover was its defining vehicle. FMS's decision to build the FCX24M Land Rover family around this specific livery rather than a generic road colour is editorially sharp—it gives each model a character and context that a plain colour would not.
Each Land Rover FCX24M variant comes with a roof rack that accepts optional scale accessories: fuel drums, spare tyres, equipment boxes and recovery boards. These are sold separately through FMS and FairRC and are the most straightforward way to personalise a Land Rover FCX24M without modifying the base vehicle. The four variants — Range Rover, Discovery, Defender 90 and Defender 110 — share the same chassis and electronics, differing only in body and minor detail parts.
FCX24M vs FCX24S — What Actually Changes
The FCX24S and FCX24M share the same core mechanical DNA — portal axles, a two-speed transmission with a transfer case, a mid-mounted power assembly, and universal joint driveshafts. What differs is the chassis geometry and the motor specification depending on the variant. The FCX24M uses the extended wheelbase ladder frame; the FCX24M Tacoma runs a 050 motor rather than the 130 brushed unit in the standard FCX24S. The Land Rover FCX24M variants run portal axles on the same extended chassis.
In practical terms: the FCX24M is the better choice when the body subject matters to you as much as the driving experience — when you want a Tacoma or a Defender that looks right, not just a crawler with a badge on it. The FCX24S remains the better choice when a compact footprint, indoor technical crawling and the deepest upgrade ecosystem are the priorities.
For a direct comparison of how both FCX24 variants perform against the larger FCX18 platform on outdoor terrain, our FCX18 LC80 vs FCX24 K5 outdoor comparison covers the specific differences in wheelbase, motor and trail capability.
