Occre 1/70 Scale Montañés Model Ship Kit – Spanish Ship-of-the-Line in 1:70
The Occre Montañés is a large wooden model ship kit that recreates an 18th-century Spanish 74-gun ship-of-the-line at 1:70 scale. With a hull length of 1250 mm and a height of 895 mm, it is designed as a long-term project for modellers who enjoy detailed rigging, deck layouts, and historical subjects.
This kit is aimed at builders who want a substantial display piece and are comfortable working with wood, metal fittings, and multi-mast rigging over many sessions.
Kit overview & scale presence
At 1:70 scale, the Montañés has a significant footprint:
Length: 1250 mm
Height: 895 mm
Width: 470 mm
This size allows for detailed deck layouts, gun batteries, ship’s boats, and ornate sternwork to be represented clearly. Even at a distance, the finished model reads as a fully equipped ship-of-the-line rather than a simplified representation.
The kit is supplied as a wooden hull and deck structure with metal and wood fittings. It is not double-planked, so planking accuracy and care during hull work are an important part of the build.
Historical background
The real Montañés was launched at Ferrol on 14 May 1794 as part of the Spanish Navy’s major ships-of-the-line programme. Contemporary accounts describe her as a highly capable vessel across different points of sail, with good stability and the ability to keep her gun batteries well clear of the water.
She served through a turbulent period of naval warfare and took part in several engagements, including the Battle of Trafalgar, where she carried 76 guns and 4 carronades on her quarterdeck. The ship’s name and distinctive figurehead honoured the financial contribution of the people from Spain’s mountainous regions. Montañés was eventually lost in a storm off the Bay of Cádiz in 1810.
Building this kit allows the modeller to represent a late-18th century Spanish ship-of-the-line with a clear link to documented naval history.
Building experience & complexity
The Montañés is specified as a high-difficulty kit. The construction process involves:
Assembling the hull framework and applying a single layer of hull planking
Installing multiple decks and internal structures
Adding gunports, cannons, boats, and deck furniture
Completing masts, yards, standing and running rigging
Because the hull is not double-planked, careful fitting and shaping of each plank is important to achieve a smooth finish. The size of the model gives good physical access to details but also increases the amount of rigging and alignment work required.
Modellers can expect a long-term build, spread over many weeks or months, with the reward of a large, detailed display ship at the end.
Rigging, colour scheme & finishing
The kit supports a fully rigged configuration with:
Multi-mast standing rigging
Complex running rigging across yards and sails (if the builder chooses to add sails)
Detailed deck-level lines and blocks
The optional Montañés paint pack (available separately) provides a consistent palette for painting and finishing:
White, black, dark brown, red
Gold and copper for decorative and metallic elements
Satin varnish and sapelli stain for wood tones
These colours help replicate late-18th century naval finishes, including hull bands, gunport framing, deck tones, and decorative work on the stern and bow.
Tools, glues and planking support (optional extras)
Several optional accessory packs are available separately to support the build and finishing process:
Rigging Tool Set
Loom-A-Line tool
Rigging tools
Microsnips
These tools assist with tensioning, routing and trimming rigging lines cleanly.
Model Makers Glue Pack
General-purpose wood adhesive
Thick cyanoacrylate (super glue) for spot-fixing and small parts
This combination covers most typical joints, from structural assemblies to metal fittings.
Planking Tool Set
Plank bending tool with blade
Nylon grip clamps
Pen-style pin pusher and brass pins
These items make it easier to shape and secure hull planks and other curved wooden components.
Occre Montañés Paint Pack
Dedicated colour set aligned with the manufacturer’s suggested scheme
Includes stain and varnish for sealing and finishing wood
While none of these extras are mandatory, they can streamline key stages of the build and help maintain consistency of finish.
Display potential
With its size and rigging complexity, the completed Montañés is intended as a static display model rather than a casual shelf piece. The overall dimensions make it suitable for:
Dedicated display cabinets or cases
A large shelf or sideboard with clear viewing distance
A focal point in a hobby room or office
The combination of hull length, tall masts, and detailed deck layout gives the model a strong visual presence, particularly when viewed from mid-range where details remain visible but the ship’s overall lines are clear.
