EuroSprinter Electric Locomotives – A Brief History
The EuroSprinter (Siemens designation ES 64) is a family of electric locomotives developed by Siemens Mobility in collaboration with Krauss-Maffei, designed for modular use across Europe’s varied rail networks. The name reflects the power rating—6,400 kW at the rail—while suffixes denote their intended roles and electrical configuration: 'F' for freight, 'U' for universal, 'P' for prototype, and '2' or '4' to indicate support for 2 or 4 electrical systems, respectively.
The EuroSprinter story began in the early 1990s, with the prototype ES 64 P (DB Class 127). It drew on earlier designs such as Spain’s RENFE Class 252 and served extensive testing across Europe. Production models include:
ES 64 F (DB Class 152): Freight locomotives introduced from 1996, replacing older heavy-haul models.
ES 64 F4 (DB Class 189): Four-system versions suitable for cross-border operation; in service in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Poland.
ES 64 U series (“Taurus”): High-speed electrics capable of reaching up to 230 km/h, used by ÖBB (Austria) as Class 1016 and 1116, DB (Germany) as Class 182, among others.
The EuroSprinter range remains influential, with locomotives operating across Europe and a direct technological lineage leading to the modern Vectron family.
