Top 15 Medieval Scale Models for History Buffs and Hobbyists: Your Ultimate Buyer’s Guide
(Review, June 11, 2026)
Whether you are a seasoned figure builder or just starting to explore historical scale modelling, the medieval period offers some of the most visually compelling subjects available. Italeri, Zvezda, Red Box and Mars Figures between them cover the full span of medieval warfare — from the Crusades and the Hundred Years' War through to the Wars of the Roses and the Ottoman campaigns — predominantly in 1:72 scale, where the range of available subjects is at its deepest.
This guide selects fifteen kits from Modellbau Universe's medieval figures range that offer the strongest combination of historical accuracy, sculpt quality and assembly accessibility. All are currently in stock.
If you enjoy historically grounded builds, this practical guide to military model kits is also worth reading.
1. Teutonic Knights (Italeri)
1:72 scale — Italeri IT 6019. The Teutonic Knights are one of the most recognisable subjects in medieval figure modelling, and this Italeri kit captures their distinctive white mantles, great helms and broadswords with good definition for the scale. A solid foundation kit and a natural starting point for a Crusader-era display.
2. Medieval ERA Templar Knights (Italeri)
1:72 scale — Italeri IT 6125. The Templar cross insignia and detailed armour make this a strong diorama kit for Crusades subjects. Well-executed Italeri sculpting that pairs naturally with the Teutonic Knights set.
3. 100 Years War — English Knights (Italeri)
1:72 scale — Italeri IT 6027. Heavily armoured knights and spearmen from the Hundred Years' War. The mix of mounted and foot figures in this set gives good compositional flexibility for battle scene dioramas.
4. Samurai Warriors Infantry, XVI–XVII AD (Zvezda)
1:72 scale — Zvezda ZV 8017. The only East Asian subject in this selection and one worth including. Zvezda's armour plate and weapon detailing on these Sengoku-period infantry figures is notably precise for 1:72, and the subject adds useful variety to a predominantly European collection.
5. Viking (9th century) (ICM)
1:16 scale — ICM ICM 16301. The only 1:16 kit in this list and the largest format subject. At this scale, facial detail, chainmail texture and equipment are rendered with a resolution that 1:72 cannot approach. A standalone display piece rather than an army-building kit.
6. Livonian Knights, 13th–14th AD (Zvezda)
1:72 scale — Zvezda ZV 8016. The Livonian Order knights are a less-covered subject in figure modelling and a natural companion to the Teutonic Knights — both operated in the Baltic region and share a similar armour aesthetic. Good choice for collectors building a Northern Crusades display.
7. War of the Roses 1. Men-at-Arms & Retinue (Red Box)
1:72 scale — Red Box RDB 72040. A well-populated set covering the mixed infantry and retinue forces of the Wars of the Roses — the 15th-century English dynastic conflict. Good figure variety and a strong base for larger battle recreations.
8. Ottoman Artillery (HäT Industry)
1:72 scale — HäT Industry HAT 8094. The Ottoman forces bring a different visual language to a medieval collection — turbans, robes and distinct artillery equipment that contrast well with the armoured Western European subjects. This set covers artillery crews and equipment from the 15th-century Ottoman expansion period.
9. Chevalier (Knight on Horseback) (CMK)
1:48 scale — CMK F48273. A single mounted knight figure at the larger 1:48 scale — more detail per figure, more presence on a display shelf. The dynamic lance-charging pose makes this a centrepiece piece rather than a unit-building kit. Good choice if you want one outstanding individual figure rather than a regiment.
10. English Knights (Zvezda)
1:72 scale — Zvezda ZV 8044. The Zvezda English Knights set is a consistent recommendation for Agincourt-era builds — well-armoured plate and mounted figures with good historical accuracy for the late 14th to early 15th century period. Currently listed as notification-only at Modellbau Universe; check availability before ordering.
11. Medieval Peasants (Zvezda)
1:72 scale — Zvezda ZV 8059. An often-overlooked subject that significantly improves the realism of a diorama. Battlefield and village scenes that include only knights and soldiers read as flat; adding period civilians — farmers, tradespeople, camp followers — grounds the scene in a way that purely military figures cannot.
12. Burgundian Infantry and Knights, 15th Century — Set 1 & Set 2 (Red Box)
1:72 scale — Red Box RDB 72109 and RDB 72110. The two-set Burgundian range from Red Box is one of the most coherent army-building options in this list. Burgundy under Charles the Bold was one of the most militarily sophisticated forces in 15th-century Europe, and buying both sets together gives a substantial, varied force with infantry, knights and crossbowmen all represented.
13. Lithuanian Medium Cavalry (Mars Figures)
1:72 scale — Mars Figures MRF 72058. Mars Figures' Eastern European cavalry range is one of the more unusual offerings in this list and worth attention from collectors who want to build beyond the standard Western European subjects. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was one of the largest states in medieval Europe; the cavalry that served it is rarely covered at this scale.
14. Scottish Heavy Cavalry, War of the Roses (Red Box)
1:72 scale — Red Box RDB 72056. Scottish heavy cavalry from the Wars of the Roses period — a natural companion to the Men-at-Arms & Retinue set from the same conflict. The heavy armour and characterful poses make these figures stand out individually as well as in formed units.
15. Medieval Trebuchet (Zvezda)
1:72 scale — Zvezda ZV 8516. The only siege engine in this list, and a strong one. A trebuchet adds a different visual dimension to a medieval diorama — scale, threat and engineering — that pure infantry and cavalry sets cannot provide. Currently listed as notification-only; check availability. The Zvezda kit is the standard reference for this subject at 1:72.
A Few Notes Before You Buy
- Scale consistency: The majority of these kits are 1:72, which displays well together. The ICM Viking (1:16) and CMK Chevalier (1:48) are standalone display pieces and are not intended to mix with the 1:72 range.
- Stock status: Several Zvezda kits in this list are currently notification-only at Modellbau Universe. Check current availability before ordering — Red Box and Italeri subjects are reliably in stock.
- Army building vs display: Red Box and Italeri sets typically include more figures per box, making them better value for building larger formations. Zvezda and CMK tend toward fewer, more precisely detailed figures suited to display and diorama use.
